accommodate [əˋkɑmə͵det] 動-容納,提供(住宿)
v., to fit; to provide with something needed

The meeting room was large enough to accommodate the various needs of the group using it.

會議室空間夠大,足以容納各種需求的群組。

Because the deadline for reserving rooms was past, the hotel manager could not accommodate our need for more rooms.
由於房間的保留期限已過,因此飯店經理無法提供我們更多房間。
  1. need of N = ...的需求
    need for N = 需要N
詞組:
  • 動 - accommodate (The hotel staff was able to accommodate our many needs for the conference.)
  • 名 - accommodation (The accommodation at the hotel include swimming pool, gym and restaurant.)
  • 形 - accommodating (The conference center manager was extremely accommodating and tried to make our stay pleasant.)


arrangement [əˋrendʒmənt] 名-安排,整理
n., the plan or organization

The travel arrangements were taken care by Sara, Mr. Billing’s capable assistant.
這趟旅程是由Billing先生的得力助手Sara一手安排的。

The arrangement of speakers was alphabetical to avoid any hurt feeling.
講者的順序依照字首字母排序,以避免爭議。
  1. capable assistant = 得力助手
  2. organize/arrangement/set up 的差別
    三者的中文都是安排,但是語感卻有所不同。
    以 Could you organize a meeting with A 為例,如果用organize,代表這是一場大會議,參加的人不是只有A跟說話者這兩方,可能還有其他參與者,必須經過事先規劃、安排,投入大量新立的。
    而如果是Could you arrange a meeting with A,這暗示到時候meeting出席的只有兩者,說話者跟A這兩方。相較於organize,arrange較不正式。
    而 set up又更不正式了,一般只有在朋友之間的對話才會使用。
  3. alphabetical = 按字母排序的 
詞組:
  • 名 - arrangement (Nobody could understand the seating arrangement.)
  • 動 - arrange (We will arrange the chairs in a circle.)
  • 形 - arranged (The arranged flower didn’t look like we chose from the catalog.)

Membership in a trade or professional association provides business contracts and mutual support. 

貿易或專業聯盟提供了商業契約並相互支持。

Because of his association with the director of the conference, we were able to get good prices for the use of the rooms.
由於他與會議主辦人的關係,使我們得以便宜地租用房間。

  1. mutual = 互相的,彼此的
  2. get good prices = 便宜
詞組:
  • 名 - association (Any association with the former company will put us in a negative light.)
  • 動 - associate (Do you think customers will associate the failed upstart with us?)
  • 形 - associated (The associated costs will put this project out of our reach.)


attend [əˋtɛnd] 動-參加
v., to go to; to pay attention to

We expect more than 100 members to attend the annual meeting. 

我們期望有超過100個成員參加這場年會。

The hotel manager attended to all our needs promptly.
飯店經理及時回應我們的需求。

  1. A attend to B's need promptly = A及時回應B的需求,
    這句在餐廳、飯店的評論中中常常會看到。
詞組:
  • 動 - attend (Gillian attended the reception for visiting ambassadors.)
  • 名 - attendee 與會者 (More than 500 attendees packed the ballroom.)
  • 名 - attendance (Attendance was low for this year’s annual meeting.)

我們一到飯店,就馬上通知飯店經理有多的客人。

hold [hold] 動-容納,舉行
v., to contain; to conduct

The meeting room holds at least 80 people comfortably.
那個會議室容納了80個人還是很寬敞。
(這一句真棒)


She holds an annual seminar that is very popular.
她主辦了那個非常受歡迎的年度研討會。



location [loˋkeʃən] 名-地點,位置
n., a position or site

The location of the meeting was changed from the Red Room the Green Room.
會議地點從紅色房間移到了綠色房間。


Disney World was the perfect location for the annual meeting since many members bring their families.
許多成員都會攜眷,因此迪士尼是最佳的年會地點。

  1. location/position/place的差別
    location = 指一個確切的點,通嘗是用精確的數字來描述,例如The location of my house is at 369 Green Street.
    position = 一樣也是指一個確切的點,但是是以其他物體做為參照,例如The position of the car has been identified.
    place = 是指一個較模糊的特定區域,較難劃定確切的邊界,例如:What is your favorite place to relax? 


overcrowded [ˌəʊvəˈkraʊdɪd] 形-過於擁擠的
adj., too crowded

As soon as the guest entered the dining room for dinner, Sue Lin could see that the room would become overcrowded.
當賓客一進到餐廳用餐時,Sue Lin馬上看出房間會變得太擠。

register [ˋrɛdʒɪstɚ] 名-登記;動-登記

According to the register, more than 250 people attended the afternoon seminar.
根據登記資料,超過250個人參加下午這場研討會。


Hotels ask all guest to register and give a home address.
飯店會要求進住者登記,並且填寫住家地址。


詞組:

  • 動 - register (You can register for the conference by going to the conference website.)
  • 名 - register (The hotel’s register showed that only half the attendees had arrived.)
  • 名 - registration (Registration is very easy because all the information and forms can be found on the conference website.)
§ registration是指註冊這個動作,而register則是註冊完所形成的記錄。


select [səˋlɛkt] 動-選擇;形-精選的
v., to choose from a group; adj., specially chosen

The conference participant selected the marketing seminar from the various offerings.
參加研討的人從各種主題中選擇行銷研討會。


The winner were a select group.
贏家是精選的一組。


  1. select = 精選的,例如 select shop
詞組:
  • 動 - select (Since there are overlapping workshops, participants will have to select which one most appeals to them.)
  • 名 - selection (His dinner selection of stuffed quail sounded better on the menu than it looked on the plate.)
  • 形 - selective (The planning committee was very selective about who received invitations.)




session [ˋsɛʃən] 名-會議

早上的會議較易額滿,請盡速報名。

  1. meeting/assembly/conference/congress
    meeting = 一群人於特定時間、地點聚集,含意最廣
    assembly = 正式的全體集會,有固定的成員、時間、地點,並定期舉行
    conference = 非定期舉行,通常是傳達某些特別的研究發現
    congress = 定期舉行的會議,討論特定主題,由各團體派代表參加,參加者要註冊、付費
    session = 一系列會議中的某一個會議,某個會議期間


take part in 動-參加,加入
v., to join or participate

The format for the session is very informal, which makes it easier for people to take part in the discussion.
這場會議的行事非常隨性,讓觀眾能更加參與討論。


We could not get enough people to take part in the meeting, so we canceled it.

由於報名人數不足,會議已取消。
