  1. pledge/commitment = 在商務英文中,pledge跟commitment都是很常用的字,但是對英文使用者來說兩者的語感不太相同。
    pledge比較常用在跟資源、金錢相關的承諾,commitment則是用在跟時間、責任有關的地方。
    此外在說話者的態度方面,當說話者使用pledge時,代表說的人本身「想做」,並不只是「有責任這麼做」。舉例來說,He made a pledge to give money to charity.(他承諾捐錢給慈善機構,而且是因為他本身想這麼做);而He had a commitment to attend the meeting.(他承諾會參加會議,而且是因為他有責任,在這句無法推斷他本身的意願)
    在文法方面,make a commitment/have a commitment都可以,但只能用make a pledge(have a pledge是錯的)
    在實務上使用,pledge較commitment正式。也因此,初次跟客戶碰面時,大多使用pledge,跟客戶開始合作關係以後,才會使用commitment。
    而promise則是更口語化,通常只在口頭上使用。因此謹慎程度排列的話,是pledge>commitment>promise

保固可以保護消費者買到有缺陷的商品。

The warranty will protect you from spending a lot of money in repairs.
保固可以讓你省下不少維修費用。
  1. 這兩句例句很有趣,涵蓋了protect常用的兩種用法:protect against/protect from。在意義上,這兩者沒什麼差別,但一般情況下我們會用 protect against 及 protect A from。舉例來說。Food protects one form starvation. / Food protects against starvation.(當然要用Food protects one against starvation也是沒錯啦,但比較少人這麼用)
